Ken Sturgis

School Finance Director

Ken Sturgis has been building meaningful experience in finance, government/public policy, and critical analysis over the last 15 years. Ken graduated with a BA in Philosophy, Psychology, and Environmental Studies from Iowa State University in 2007 and was awarded a Master of Accountancy from ISU in 2010. He has spent his professional life working in various governmental roles including as a Tax Compliance Officer for the Internal Revenue Service with the Department of the Treasury. He also built his communications, policy and teamwork skills through a variety of leadership and policy-based positions at the federal Department of Agriculture. Ken’s considerable experience includes auditing income tax returns, writing and interpreting agency policy, system implementation, data synthesis, and task automation. Throughout his career, Ken has focused on providing high-quality internal and external customer support, while transforming highly technical jargon into plain English. He leverages technology, educates, develops policy, and provides meaningful data and technical solutions to ease bureaucratic workload so customers can focus on their core competencies. Ken joined ISFIS in January 2025 to provide additional school finance support for ISFIS subscribers.

In addition to his academic degrees, Ken’s licenses include a Certified Public Accountant (2011) and a Certified Government Financial Manager (2017).

He and his wife Josie, along with daughter, Wren, son, Reid, Malcolm (the dog), and two cats (Nyx and Lucy), all live in Beaverdale, on the north side of Des Moines. When not working Ken enjoys reading, games, biking, tackling a house project, recording an occasional podcast, and engaging in an evening of friendly (or competitive) trivia. Ken is also known for baking some amazing sourdough bread.
